SKI TEAMS
We provide financial, coaching and staffing support for the Rhinelander High School Nordic Ski Team, Rhinelander Middle School Nordic Ski Team and the Sno-Dags.
The High School Team has averaged 20 athletes and the Middle School Team averaged 30 athletes the past several years. The Club provides uniforms, ski rentals for Middle School athletes, waxing supplies and staff support, race or event entry fees, transportation to races or events, lodging for some events, along with roller skiing and other equipment. The Club also financially supports Coach's certifications, expenses and the Head Coach salary. The Club's annual budget for the High School and Middle Teams is in excess of $15,000.
The Sno-Dag program averages 30 - 40 kids from 1st through 4th grade. The Club maintains a ski rental program to outfit the kids with skis, poles and boots. In 2023 we replaced half of the Sno-Dag ski equipment at a cost of over $2,500. We are currently looking for funding to replace the other half of the equipment in 2024.
We maintain approximately 30 kilometers of cross-country ski trails at three locations:
No daily ski passes are required to ski any of the trails. However, donations are accepted and necessary for us to maintain the trails.
The Club owns and maintains several snowmobiles, an ATV and a UTV, TiddTech and Ginzu grooming equipment. We also own and take care of several buildings and storage garages at the Northwoods and Community Trail locations. The annual operating budget (i.e., gas, repairs, maintenance, mowing, etc.) to maintain our cross country ski trails is in excess of $5,000. In 2023, the Club purchased a Ginzu groomer to replace aging grooming equipment and a John Deere UTV to provide a safer and more secure vehicle for our volunteer groomers.
The Club created the Judy Swank Memorial Scholarship shortly after Judy lost her battle to cancer in 2009. Judy was the high school Nordic ski coach from 1991 to 2002 and a long-time board member of our club. She had a passion for Nordic skiing and promoted healthy lifestyles in the community. Judy taught hundreds of athletes how to ski and excel in the sport but more importantly she taught them how to live and become productive citizens. We award this scholarship in Judy’s memory, to a graduating Nordic skier who exemplifies the character that Judy fostered in all her athletes. You can make a donation towards this scholarship at the link provided below.
You can support Northwoods Nordic Ski Club by making a tax-deductible donation either by sending us a check or by completing the on-line donation request link below. Any amount can be entered and any amount is very much appreciated.
The Club has moved forward in 2023 with the purchase of a 96-inch wide Ginzu groomer to replace aging grooming equipment and a John Deere UTV to provide a safer and more secure vehicle for our volunteer groomers. It’s a cost of grooming that equipment gets old, breaks down, and needs replacement. And that new implements to tow groomers have come a long way from pulling groomers with a snowmobile that exposed our groomers to the winters cold and snow. UTVs now provide a safe environment for our groomers and better vehicles to handle drifting snow and the deeper snowfalls we’ve been experiencing the past couple of years.
The Club has received a $25,000 matching donations towards the $50,000 fundrasing goal for the John Deer Gator and Ginzu groomer. Please help us raise this $25,000 in order to meet our matching grant donation.
